Fragrance distiller workshop
Workshop leader: Therese Brenner
We grow a variety of plants in our garden near the gallery, e.g. lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, sage garden hyssop, etc. In addition to being eaten as food, they provide valuable raw material for multi-purpose utilization. The extraction of essential oils is an old, beautiful and pleasant utilization process.
Only about 10% of plants can produce essential oil, these are called aromatic plants. The aromatic oils extracted during the process can be used for a variety of purposes, e.g. cosmetic, perfumery and household chemical raw materials, as raw materials for phytomedicines used in aromatherapy, and as food flavoring raw materials. In the history of mankind, the extraction of aromatic plant active substances goes back thousands of years. The first historical traces come from China and Egypt, and distillation began to be used in India and Persia.
Participants in our workshop can learn about the steps of the process, from the preparation of the plants through steam distillation, distillation with Alembic equipment, to the filling of the pleasant-smelling volatile substances into small bottles.
